Waiting and watching Hurricane Irma for almost two weeks as she devastated Caribbean Islands as well as Key West, and not knowing which course she would take only to then find out days before she is headed directly towards us was stressful in itself. We then had a handful of days to take action, secure our homes, our businesses, our properties, our loved ones and our pets. Whether you left the state, stayed behind or had to evacuate in your zone; you didn’t know if you would have a home, business or job to go back to. Would life, as we know it be changed forever?
As a whole we go through very powerful emotions such as: fear, confusion, sadness, anger, loss and grief when faced with a traumatic event. When we experience a traumatic event the healing process can be long, and although the event has passed, the mind and body may not be able to move on from it.
PTSD onset happens when someone is emotionally, physically and mentally unable to move on from a traumatic experience. We find ourselves doing everything possible to return to our normal. Keep in mind that in an acute phase of PTSD getting a therapeutic massage can set off triggers; but when you’re experiencing symptoms of PTSD, such as fear, anxiety and depression a therapeutic massage can be helpful to the recovery process. Massage naturally helps the body rebalance itself.
Massage can be effective in helping PTSD sufferers take back a sense of empowerment and safety through releasing the muscles that are primarily affected and restoring healthy function of the nervous system. When you are under stress cortisol (the stress hormone) is released. When our bodies release serotonin and dopamine, cortisol decreases which helps the body and brain relax. Getting a therapeutic massage can relieve physical and emotional pain significantly.
We don’t realize how many negative emotions we have stored in our body, and the ability to release those negative emotions through massage can be powerful and enlightening experience. Remember that healing takes time and everyone has their own path to recover from trauma.
